You may have heard that the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro will ditch GM’s aging Zeta platform for the Alpha architecture on which the current Cadillac ATS and CTS are based. However, the 2016 Camaro will not use the short-wheelbase version of Alpha from the ATS, but the long-wheelbase version from the 2014 Cadillac CTS.
This will result in a lighter Camaro by several hundred pounds and therefore engineers saw the opportunity of fitting a smaller, entry-level engine to the coupe, especially since the 2015 Ford Mustang features a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine producing more than 305 hp.
According to an Automobile magazine report, the engine picked by GM for the 2016 Camaro is the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit from the Cadillac CTS and ATS, on which it produces 272 hp and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.
Hopefully, GM will tune the mill to produce a similar output to the Mustang. Either way, it will be the first time ever a Camaro will be offered with a four-cylinder engine. Other engine choices will remain the SS and high-performance variants of the small-block 6.2-liter V8, as well as the 3.6-liter V6.
Despite having the same wheelbase as the CTS (114.6 inches/2,911mm), the Camaro is expected to be at least 5 inches shorter overall than the mid-size sedan and about the same overall length as the current car.
As for the design, it remains to be seen whether Chevrolet will introduce a daring design, much like the current generation Camaro was at the time of its launch.
