When it comes to Driveclub, it’s all in the name, really. You drive and you do so while being part of a club (or crew…). The idea is far from revolutionary, and there’ve literally been dozens of games that have adopted it, with varying levels of depth.
In the case of this new PlayStation 4 (PS4) exclusive title, though, it’s the main feature and intrinsically linked to all of the game’s mechanics – in other words, you won’t be able to play by yourself, or if you will be allowed, you’ll only be getting an unsatisfactorily small fraction of the experience.
We’re weary when looking at Driveclub, since its development is dragging on, and the footage they’ve showed so far has been okay but not mind-blowing.
However, if they get car handling physics right and generally the driving part done well, then all the other elements have a good chance of blending in together into a single experience. If there’s too much focus on clubs and what livery to use on your car (or social network aspects in general), the game will not gain a following.
As far as release dates go, publisher SCEA says it will hit shelves July 10, with the promise of being “a next generation, socially connected racing game that captures the heart and soul of car culture and the passion it creates.”
