“Evolution” seems to be the key word in play for Opel and the successors to the brand’s two most popular models, the B-segment Corsa and C-segment Astra. It won’t be long before we see what Opel came up with for the Corsa, but for the next Astra, we’ll have to wait until mid-2015 to early-2016.

The new five-door hatchback version of the Astra spied here retains the compact model’s familiar silhouette, but it looks slightly sharper with a lower and flatter front-end, which like the rest of the car, will take styling cues from the Monza Coupe Concept seen at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

While longer than the model it will replace, the new Astra five-door will benefit from a series of weight saving measures, including the latest version of GM’s compact model platform, allowing it to shed some pounds over the current car.

The new Astra will welcome Opel’s all-new powertrain line-up, including a 114hp (115PS) 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, and more efficient versions of the brand’s 1.6-liter turbo petrol and diesel units, linked to new or improved transmissions.
