Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) has started production of the heavily revised 68 hp 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine which will equip the second generation Aygo and the recently facelifted Yaris subcompact.

Toyota has invested 123 million Polish zlotys (€30 million) for production of the new engine and will hire an additional 380 employees before the end of October to fill the plant’s 3-shift operations. To mark celebrations, TMMP donated a new Aygo to the local infant orphanage in Wałbrzych.

Featuring higher combustion efficiency as well as reduced friction and weight, the revised engine is built in two different versions, with the most frugal Eco variant returning 3.8 l/100 km (61.9 mpg US) and emitting 88 g of CO2 per kilometer in the Aygo.

On April 17, the Polish plant started shipping engines to Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile (TPCA) in Czech Republic where the Aygo, Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 are built. Starting July 23, the plant will also deliver engines to Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) where the Yaris is made.

“The plant honestly serves as an inspiration in our continuous search for true competitiveness,” said Takeshi Numa, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Europe, adding that TMMP is one of the most competitive plants of Toyota around the world.
