When we first learnt that Honda was cancelling its Insight, we thought the next car to go was going to be the slow-selling CR-Z hybrid coupe, but it turns out we were wrong. The CR-Z will soldier on, but the Japanese automaker will be abolishing another model from its electrified range, the Fit EV.
The Insight will be phased out first, and as Edmund’s tells us after speaking to an American Honda spokesman, the car will be kept in stock at dealers across the US until the end of the year, with production scheduled to cease this summer.
The Fit EV will be made until later in the year, and since it was a lease-only model, Honda will have to keep supporting those that are currently driving the cars, until the end of each respective contract.
“Our path forward includes a new generation of electromotive technologies, including expanded application of our two-motor hybrid system,” Sage Marie, a Honda spokesman, told the news site.
The manufacturer will move to using different hybrid tech, systems similar to those found on the new Accord Hybrid. It features a two-motor system whose application is sure to expand to its other models, was well. The quoted source also speculated that Honda will be making an announcement in regards to its FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle “in the coming weeks.”
