BMW’s first-ever front-wheel drive production car, the 2-Series Active Tourer, will land in German dealerships on September 27, with prices starting from €27,200 ($36,782). This week, the automaker released a huge photo gallery and a detailed presentation of its new model.
Being an MPV, practicality has to be a priority for the 2-Series Active Tourer, with BMW stating that it has a versatile luggage compartment, with a capacity of 468 liters (16.5 cu-ft) that can be expanded to 1,510 liters (53.3 cu-ft) when the rear seats are folded. The rear backrest is offered as standard with a 40:20:40 split-folding ratio, and the rear seat also slides in order to increase legroom in the rear or load capacity. There is also a foldable boot floor that houses a storage compartment with a multifunction tray.
The 2-Series Active Tourer is offered with BMW’s latest generation three- and four-cylinder turbocharged engines installed transversely. There are three units offered at launch: a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol producing 136PS (134hp) in the 218i, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol producing 231PS (228hp) in the 225i and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel with 150PS (148hp) in the 218d.
The latter is also the most economical, averaging 4.1 l/100 km (57.3 mpg US) and emitting 135 g/km of CO2. The fastest model is the 225i, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph).
Standard equipment includes Radio Professional including a hands-free telephone facility with Bluetooth interface, the BMW iDrive control system with controller on the center console and 6.5-inch Control Display, a rain sensor and automatic headlight activation, a sports leather steering wheel, the Intelligent Emergency Call system and Collision Warning with City Braking function.
The 2-Series Active Tourer will also be available with the M Sport package from the end of 2014.
