Mercedes-AMG has finally revealed the specs of the all-new 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine which will debut in the new AMG GT sports car. Delivering up to 510 PS (503 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque, the engine has been developed and produced exclusively by Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Codenamed M178, the new AMG V8 engine has two turbochargers that are not mounted on the outside of the cylinder banks but rather inside the V configuration – experts call it a ‘hot inside V’. The benefits are a compact engine design, an optimum response and low exhaust gas emissions, according to Mercedes-AMG.
Since the engine has dry sump lubrication, it can be installed lower for a center of gravity closer to the road. The upcoming Mercedes AMG GT will thus be the world’s first sports car carrying an engine with hot inside V and dry sump lubrication. Mercedes-AMG also says the engine is the lightest in its segment, with a dry weight of 209 kg (461 lbs).
AMG enthusiasts will be happy to learn that the new engine “boasts an emotive and unmistakable AMG V8 engine sound, along with an immediate response and high pulling power,” according to Mercedes-AMG. The torque curve is also good news, as the peak of 650 Nm is available in the broad range from 1,750 to 4,750 rpm. The automaker says the engine is also highly efficient, but no specific figures were provided.
The 3,982cc engine is closely related in terms of technology to the AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine in the A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and GLA 45 AMG. Both engines share the same bore/stroke ratio and the third-generation direct petrol injection with piezo injectors. The V8 biturbo engine meets the Euro 6 emissions standard and the maximum particulate emissions level that takes effect in 2016.
