While we were waiting for Toyota and its Prius PHEV to finish up a lap on the ‘Ring with a tablespoon of fuel, our spies emailed us these fresh scoops of what we believe to be the King Cobra of Mustangs, or in other words, the next Shelby GT500, which some say may be renamed to SVT or GT350.

This is the first time we see a 2016 Mustang GT500 prototype without those silly nylon bags on the front and the alloy wheel covers, giving us a full view of the fanged grille and the swooping chin spoilers that almost touch the ground.

And that’s not all; the car also has wider fenders with the front ones gaining air outlets, new protruding side skirts, a full-width rear diffuser housing four-large quad tailpipes, enormous brakes with cross-drilled rotors, and an air intake on the hood.

The overly aggressive aerodynamic setup has our spies thinking that it could be a track special or race-spec version of the GT500 / SVT, but then again, the top edition of the Mustang should and will stand out from the crowd, so fingers crossed.

The mystery of what’s lurking under the hood remains, though, the current Mustang’s sports supercharged 5.8-liter V8 with 662 ponies and 631 lb-ft of torque could be retained, possibly with some modifications and/or upgrades.

Ford’s new top muscle car should be unleashed on the road sometime next year.
