Subaru of America is reportedly going to face a class-action lawsuit for not notifying owners that their 2.0- and 2.5-liter boxer (gasoline) engines will “prematurely burn off and/or consume abnormal and excessive amounts of engine oil.”
Apparently, the thing that’s bugging owners the most is the fact that Subaru has failed to acknowledge this as a problem on their end, thus are not covering any of the associated repair costs.
According to USA Today, a quote from the suit says owners are required to “constantly replenish (and pay for) engine oil … at an unreasonably rapid pace”. Some claim to have even covered as much as $8,000 out of their own pockets, since the oil being burnt and then passed through the exhaust system also damages oxygen sensors, catalytic converters and even sparkplugs, it seems…
Subaru representatives have stepped forth with statements, though they go along the lines of “We have also worked with customers on this issue,” or “While we believe the oil consumption of our vehicles to be within acceptable levels.”
Let’s see if Subaru handles these serious accusations diligently. The source article says it’s believed that in order to cull the Subarus’ oil drinking habit, “an intricate repair process” is required.
Currently, as showcased by the video posted below, dealers are overfilling cars with oil when they’re taken in for service – a truly genius solution on their part, and much cheaper than actually fixing the fault(s?).
