It’s not all sad news to hear Volvo has finally pulled the plug on its old XC90, a model that has been in production for the last 12 years, since it will continue to be made in Daquing, China, under the name XC Classic. It really is, as Volvo themselves say, “the end of an era,” in which some 636,143 XC90s rolled out of the Torslanda plant gates.
Now, they need to retool and make room on the factory’s production lines for the all-new XC90 a model of crucial importance to the company.
The all-new XC90 is set to debut at the Paris motor show in September, before going on sale around the world in 2015. It promises a much more modern approach than before, with a cutting-edge minimalist interior that will all be centered on a single large touchscreen infotainment unit with minimal button placement throughout.
Engines, as we’ve known for two years now and were recently reminded, will be no bigger than two-liters in displacement, though, through the use of hybrid tech, power levels for the XC90 will be as high as 400 horses for the T8 top spec variants.
