Although in its fifth year of production, the Chevrolet Equinox SUV is still going strong in the United States, posting sales increases year after year.
Since its introduction in 2009 as a 2010 model, the Equinox has seen “sustained sales month after month and year after year,” with GM comparing it to bestsellers like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
In 2009, GM sold 86,148 Equinox SUVs, with sales consistently increasing each year, culminating with 238,192 units in 2013. 84 percent of last year’s sales were to individual buyers. In July 2014, more than 25,300 new customers took delivery of a new Equinox, accounting for a 37 percent surge in year-over-year sales.
“Equinox is one of the rare vehicles that has increased its sales every year since its current generation was introduced. It is a market-tested and proven product, and recommendations from enthusiastic customers form the backbone of the Equinox’s strength. We think 2014 should see the third straight year of sales above 200,000,” said Steve Majoros, marketing director, Chevrolet.
Furthermore, GM says nearly 3 in 10 customers (27 percent) have traded in their first Equinox for a second. To support demand for the SUV, GM reopened an assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and started running a shuttle system, taking Equinox bodies to Oshawa, Ontario for paint and final production – those are in addition to the Equinox’s assembly home in Ingersoll, Ontario.
The Chevrolet Equinox comes standard with an Ecotec 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 182 hp, with a 301hp 3.6-liter V6 being also available. Prices start from $25,315 for the 2014 Equinox LS.
