Comparing a modern Jaguar F-Type with a car launched in 2006 will obviously reveal some unsurprising conclusions.

However, that’s exactly what Autocar did, putting the F-Type side by side with the larger XK, which is being discontinued this year.

The purpose was simple: find how Jaguar has to improve the next-generation XK (if there will be one) in order to resemble more its smaller sibling.

As Steve Sutcliffe found by driving both cars, the differences are instantly noticeable. The F-Type has a much lower driving position, a better ride, a more precise steering, more responsive brakes and throttle. I’m sure you get the picture – there’s not a single thing the tested XK Dynamic R can do better than the F-Type.

That means Jaguar will have a lot of work to do for an XK successor, beginning with the car’s outdated chassis.
