If you feel like the pickup look suits the fourth-gen VW Jetta, and you have space requirements that only a flatbed could satisfy, then this sedan conversion may be your ticket.
The conversion is achieved via a $3,500 kit created by Smyth Performance, a company based in Wareham, Massachusetts. It was started by Mark Smith, a twenty-year veteran of the modding scene – he helped create Factory Five Racing and Local Motors.
The package on offer consists of in-house created fiberglass components, some tubular steel parts and fittings.
They first start by removing the trunk, the rear doors, then they begin bolting on the new bits.
There are obviously no compatibility issues with engines, so if you get one of these as a diesel then convert it, you could be looking at a seriously cost-effective way to own a pick-up that also happens to be very frugal.
