BMW has announced a new diesel engine for the 2-Series Coupe in Europe, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit with an output of 190PS (187hp) and 400Nm (295lb-ft) of torque.

In combination with the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission, the new engine allows the BMW 220d Coupe to reach 100 km/h from standstill in 7 seconds, an improvement of 0.1 seconds over the previous 184PS (181hp) engine. With the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, the 220d Coupe hits 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds, also 0.1 seconds quicker than before.

Announced earlier this year for the BMW 5-Series as well, the new engine is a member of the new BMW Group engine family and features the latest version of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

Average fuel economy with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox is 4.4-4.1 l/100 km (53.4-57.3 mpg US), with a CO2 level of 115-107 g/km. With the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission, combined fuel economy drops to 4.1-3.8 l/100 km (57.3-61.9 mpg US) and CO2 emissions are rated at 99 g/km (figures vary depending of selected tyre size).

Compared with the previous engine, the new one has 7 extra horsepower and a 20Nm (15lb-ft) higher peak torque. It is also 2 kg (4.4 lbs) lighter, with BMW saying advancements have been made in terms of acoustic comfort and the starting behavior of the Auto Start Stop function as well.

Not that anyone would be really interested in towing things with a 2-Series Coupe, but BMW says the maximum trailer load of the BMW 220d Coupe is up by 300 to 1,500 kilograms (3,307 lbs).
