The inaugural season of the all-electric Formula E series kicked off this weekend, and the first venue on the racing calendar was the Beijing ePrix.
It was won by ABT’s Lucas di Grassi, but the most memorable moment will probably be the final lap crash between former F1 star Nick Heidfeld and Nicolas Prost, the son of the four-time F1 champion.
The video posted below speaks for itself, really, and the crash is straightforward to understand: Heidfeld tries to overtake Prost, but Prost doesn’t see Heidfeld and tries to take the usual line through the chicane.
It was not only a spectacular crash, but one with important points implications too. The final winner, di Grassi, was actually third behind the two, and it was their crash (that put them both out of the running) that allowed him to take the top spot. Now the Italian Brazilian leads the drivers’ standings, with Andretti Formula E leads in the teams section.
