If we were to pick a mainstream equivalent to Porsche’s evolutionary approach in design, it would be Mini, but before you get all negative, learn that this prototype is a test mule for the next Countryman.
This tester shares most of its body with the current, first generation Countryman that was launched back in 2010, having undergone a light facelift this year, but underneath, it rides on the BMW Group’s new and more versatile UKL1 platform, the same architecture that underpins the new Mini Hatch and BMW 2-Series AT.
The longer front and rear overhangs suggest an increase in exterior dimensions, and consequently, interior space.
We expect Mini to preview the car’s design with a conceptual study in the next couple of years, before launching the actual model in 2017.
Power for the Countryman Mk2 will come from the BMW Group’s new three- and four cylinder turbocharged engines, used in the latest Mini Hatch, with both front- and all-wheel drive models to be on offer.
