Nowadays, it’s not sufficient to create a car that’s functionally great, but lacks character and flair, because buyers will just shop around until they find one that does both well.

The Nissan Pulsar is one of those cars: it’s hard to fault for functionality, space, comfort and refinement, yet it’s equally difficult to justify you’d buy one – you’d only get one over its rivals if you really loved the Nissan badge…

AutoExpress tried it out and found absolutely nothing wrong with it. In fact, it is, by their account, a thoroughly competent and modern hatchback with a lot to like. Its only problem is a deep lack of character which will hinder its market effectiveness, since rivals either offer a more recognizable nameplate, more style or a more thrilling drive, plus all the practical stuff.

Will it be a hit for Nissan, one which will turn the family hatch sector on its head? Probably not.
