Renault’s design boss, Laurens van den Acker seems to really be into spilling the beans on his company’s future product strategy. This time, he said the automaker is interested in having a range of Alpine-branded sporty cars, but that the decision to make it needs to be backed by sound financial arguments.
Autocar spoke to him on the sidelines of the Moscow motor show, where he was quoted as saying: “As with many things we need to have a good business first. We all love Alpines but we all want to make money as well. Let’s get the first car right and then I hope I can start doing Alpines for the rest of my life.”
We like the way that sounds and hope it materializes somehow!
As for the first Alpine, so far we know very little about it. Firstly, it will look nothing like the (pictured) concept car that we thought supposedly previewed it, revealed back in 2012. However, the source report says “design work on the car is understood to be at an advanced stage,” and that company CEO Carlos Ghosn is pleased with the result.
Another interesting fact, albeit a seemingly predictable one, is the car’s emphasis on handing and driver enjoyment above all-out speed – it will probably be a car similar to the Alfa Romeo 4C.
