The Audi A1 is probably the only other car on the market that can rival the likes of the MINI Cooper. In fact, the appearance of the A1 Sportback may have even been the reason behind MINI’s decision to launch a five door model.
Now, some four years after it went into production, the model has reached the half-a-million produced mark.
The 500,000 model to roll down the line was a regular three-door model, finished in Misano red and sporting VW’s 1.4-liter TFSI engine; it’s destined for an Audi customer in Germany.
Built at the plant in Forest, a municipality of Brussels, the announcement was cause for celebration in Belgium, and it even prompted the small country’s king to pop by and add significance to the moment.
Thomas Sigi, Board of Management Member for Human Resources and Labor Relations Director at Audi, explained: “The King’s visit on the jubilee of the Audi A1 is a special honor for the Brussels team. Our employees here produce the A1 family with experience, skill and passion, and at the same time demonstrate the international competitiveness of the plant in Belgium.”
All we can say is congrats to Audi for really challenging the MINI with its A1, ending its hegemony as the best premium supermini – it’s now a bit of a tie between the two, and that kind of competition is good and usually spurs the manufacturers on to innovate and outdo one another…
