BMW wasn’t the first carmaker to dive into the luxury SUV segment – that distinction falls to Land Rover, but it managed to become if not the, one of the most successful in the industry.
The numbers speak for themselves as to this day, fifteen years after the launch of its first X-badged product, the E53 X5 in 1999, BMW has sold more than 3.3 million X models worldwide, with almost one in every three newly registered vehicles of the brand being an SUV today.
Seeing the potential in SUV and crossover model sales, BMW quickly infused its range with “Sports Activity Vehicles” or SAV (a term that never caught on with the public), including the smaller X1 and X3, and the “Sports Activity Coupe” or SAC X4 and X6, which are sportier looking versions of the X3 and X5 respectively.
Today, the X5 is in its third generation, the X3 and X6 in their second, the X4 is brand new, while the X1 is getting ready to be replaced with the firm’s first front-wheel drive-based SUV. And that’s not all, as BMW has also confirmed the development of the X7, which it describes as “an exceptionally large and luxurious model”.
We thought it would be interesting to run a poll on which of all X models produced to this day is the best looking one. You can cast your vote below.
