Hyundai has announced two new downsized turbocharged petrol engines and its first ever seven-speed dual-clutch transmission at the Paris Auto Show.
The first engine is a 1.0-liter T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder petrol which will equip the all-new i20 in 2015, while the second is a 1.4-liter T-GDI turbocharged four-cylinder petrol showcased in the i30 CNG concept car. The study also features Hyundai’s first seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Both engines are part of a new generation of engines from the Kappa family, featuring direct gasoline injection and single-scroll turbochargers. Developed in Hyundai’s European Technical Center in Rüsselsheim, the 1,0-liter T-GDI engine is able to produce up to 120PS (118hp) and 172Nm (127lb-ft)of torque.
The unit features an electronically-controlled waste-gate to optimize flow and improve low-end torque and throttle response, as well as a six-hole GDI injector, pressured to a higher-than-average 200 bar, in order to secure a clean combustion and improving fuel economy and emissions to fulfil Euro 6 emission standards.
The larger 1.4-liter engine is 14kg (31lbs) lighter than its predecessor from the Gamma family, tipping the scales at 87kg (192lbs). It is also smaller and incorporates a sophisticated high-pressure single-scroll turbocharger integrated within the exhaust manifold to improve operational efficiency. Hyundai says this gives it an improved throttle response and low-end torque.
Showcased in the i30 CNG concept car, the Kappa 1,4-liter T-GDI engine produces 117PS (115hp) and 206Nm (152lb-ft) of torque in CNG mode. Also Euro 6-compliant, the engine emits just 87 g/km of CO2 in the i30 CNG study.
Finally, Hyundai also debuts a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) in Paris. The automaker says the new gearbox delivers improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions compared to a conventional six-gear automated transmission, while providing improved acceleration performance.
