An intriguing hypothesis regarding the cause of Michael Schumacher’s terrible head injuries has been launched by Formula 1 commentator Jean-Louis Moncet.
The Frenchman claims that the Formula 1 champion’s brain injury was caused by the mounting of the GoPro camera on his ski helmet. Moncet made the claim after speaking to Schumacher’s son, Mick, who was with his father when the accident happened on December 29 last year.
“The problem for Michael was not the hit, but the mounting of the Go-Pro camera that he had on his helmet that injured his brain,” Moncet told Europe 1 radio station. “I saw his son and he told me that Schumi is waking up very slowly; very slowly. Although things are going at a slow pace, he has a lot of time, I would say he has his whole life in front of him to get back on track,” Moncet added.
It is believed that the camera’s mounting could have worsened the blow and caused the helmet to shatter into pieces. Experts from ENSA, a world-renowned ski and climbing academy in the French ski resort of Chamonix, have conducted tests to see whether the presence of a solid object between a helmet colliding with a rock would weaken the structure.
“The helmet completely broke. It was in at least two parts. ENSA analyzed the piece of the helmet to check the material, and all was OK,” a source close to the investigation told The Telegraph earlier this year. “But why did it explode on impact? Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory has been testing to see if the camera weakened the structure,” the source added.
The camera itself was not destroyed in the accident and represents crucial evidence in the official investigation. GoPro’s shares fell as much as 16 percent on Monday after Moncet’s allegations.
