Ford refuses to show any interest in making an ST version of the current Mondeo. The outgoing model never got one, even though it did come with the Volvo-derived five-pot from the smaller hot Focus – it was never a fully fledged sporty version; the potential was always there.
Sadly, even with an all-new Mondeo just around the corner, Ford does not seem interested in slapping an ST badge on it. In fact, they’re making it into more of a premium sedan that’s also a bit sporty too – not overtly sporty, though, and perhaps this is where such a variant would make sense (much needed overt sportiness).
I mean, they could even give it all-wheel drive and the 2.3-liter from the upcoming Focus RS/new EcoBoost Mustang, some chassis tweaks and a body kit and it’s done – nobody asked for the Vignale…
We imagine that if Ford really tried, the result could be a great drivers’ car to rival with the likes of the Audi S4 – the Blue Oval’s equivalent of the Opel / Vauxhall Insignia OPC / VXR. Such a version would also boost the kudos of the entire Mondeo range, like it does in the case of the Focus and Fiesta.
