While the fact that the new Ford Mondeo is a rebadged Fusion may detract somewhat from its originality factor, it’s not like the Europeans are getting an American car…
Actually, it’s the other way round – it’s America that received a distinctly European car that should have debuted on the Old Continent first, around two years ago.
Regardless, now that it’s finally here, there’s a lot to like. The styling we already know, although we’d not had a good look at the estate model until now. The interior we already know, and we know most of the petrol engines.
However, with its new diesels and first ever hybrid variant (that few will dare buy), it’s the engine options that are most intriguing. The pair of 2.0-liter diesel engines, putting out either 180 or 210 PS, will definitely be the ones that catch most Euro buyers’ eye, though for company car duties, it will be the smaller diesels that will make up the bulk of sales.
Petrol engines will go mostly unnoticed in Europe, until the prophesied 1.0-liter EcoBoost comes along and gets people talking again. It’s probably going to get an electric supercharger and it will probably put out around 140 horses.
