After several sightings of Chevrolet’s next-gen Camaro coupe, our spies finally caught up with the first prototype of the convertible that will carry on with a retractable soft top.

We should see the new Camaro Convertible about a year or so after the launch of the coupe, which itself is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2015, possibly as a 2017MY.

It will have seating for four passengers sharing the same lighter and more compact Alpha platform as well as engine range with the new Coupe, offering buyers a choice of V6, V8 and very likely, a version of the 272hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit used in the Cadillac ATS and CTS.

These spy shots of the heavily cladded tester were taken from above, so we don’t get a clear look at the convertible’s profile, but from what we can tell, the fabric top seems to keep the same shape as the coupe’s roofline.
