McLaren’s upcoming entry-level sports car that was up until now referred to by its internal codename ‘P13’ has been officially named the ‘Sports Series’.

It will be the third McLaren sports car after the 650S and the already sold out P1 hypercar with the British brand placing its world premiere in the second quarter of 2015, so we could see it at the New York or Shanghai auto shows.

“The McLaren Sports Series will be a pure McLaren, building on the credentials of the McLaren P1 and 650S, bringing Formula 1 technologies and know-how to a new segment for the brand. It will feature a carbon fibre chassis and mid-mounted V8 engine,” said McLaren in a statement.

The Sports Series will target the likes of Porsche’s 911 Turbo and GT3 models, the V10-powered Audi R8 and Mercedes-AMG GT.

Previously, McLaren had said that the mid-engine model will “will be a comfortable, usable, and beautiful mid-engined two seater sportscar” that will be offered in more than one derivative.

The SS (we wonder if McLaren will ever call it that) will ride on a modified version of the 650S’ carbon fiber tub utilizing its 650PS / 641bhp 3.8-liter V8 turbo in a de-tuned state with a lower output.
