The Maybach nameplate is back after its second death, but only on high-end Mercedes-Benz sedans for now.
According to Automotive News, Daimler is restricting the Maybach designation for three sedans, starting with the Mercedes-Maybach S600 sedan being shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.
Two other derivatives will follow the Maybach S600’s lavishly appointed interior, the Mercedes-Maybach S550 and S400 4Matic, that version being powered by a 3.0-liter V6 to appease Chinese tax brackets.
But Daimler says they have no plans for any other Mercedes-Maybach branded vehicles other than these three sedans, downplaying rumors of a Maybach GL that were bouncing around earlier this year. While Mercedes’ marketing exec Ola Kaellenius refused to rule anything out to Automotive News, you can bet the company is hedging its bets after the last Maybach revival bombed big time.
Still, it would be nice to keep one marque sacred to big, luxurious sedans. But give a Maybach-ified GL time, because it’s the world we live in now.
