Mitsubishi has unveiled the all-new Triton pickup truck in Thailand today, the country where the model is built at the Laem Chabang Plant. Known as the L200 in most export markets, the new Mitsubishi Triton will eventually go on sale in some 150 countries from the ASEAN region, Oceania, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Latin America.
It’s the model’s first full redesign in nine years and Mitsubishi’s goal was to develop the “Ultimate Sport Utility Truck,” a term by which it understands a combination between the comfortable interior of a passenger car with the functionality and reliability of a pickup.
Available in Single Cab, Double Cab and Club Cab variants, the fifth-generation Mitsubishi Triton is offered with four engine options. A new 181PS 2.4-liter MIVEC turbo diesel joins improved versions of the 2.5-liter turbo diesel (offered in two states of tune – 128PS and 178PS) and of the 2.4-liter gasoline engine producing 128PS.
Depending on which engine is selected, transmission options include five- or six-speed manuals as well as a five-speed automatic. Mitsubishi says the new Triton provides generous interior space, ample payload capacity, and class-leading handling.
Quietness and ride comfort are said to be on a par with a passenger car thanks to the new diesel engine, optimization of the suspension, as well as “the strategic placement” of sound insulation, absorption and vibration damping materials.
As for the design, the new Mitsubishi Triton unfortunately doesn’t have much in common with the sleek GR-HEV Concept unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show. It looks more like a heavily revised version of the previous model, featuring a more imposing chrome grille, redesigned headlights and taillights and a new interior.
