Citroen announced that the most successful driver in the history of the World Rally Championship is making a comeback to the 2015 calendar’s season opener to help launch its DS brand.
Sebastien Loeb, who has nine WRC drivers’ titles under his belt, all of them with Citroen, will reunite with co-driver Daniel Elena and the DS3 WRC for a one-off appearance in the most prestigious race of the championship, which will take place from 19-25 January.
Loeb, who has won the Monte-Carlo rally a record seven times, said: “I didn’t hesitate for a second when I was offered the chance to compete at the opening round of the 2015 WRC. I think Daniele [Elena] and I would agree that Monte-Carlo is one of our favorite events.”
In the past two years, Loeb raced in everything he could get his hands on. He competed in he World Touring Car Championship, driving the Citroen C-Elysée WTCC car, smashed the Pikes Peak record in a Peugeot 208 T16, bagged a win and three qualifying race wins in the FIA GT Series with a McLaren MP4-12C and took part in the a couple of Porsche Supercup races.
Although he took part in three WRC events in 2013, one of them being the Monte-Carlo Rally which he won, the Frenchman conceded that things won’t be easy: “Obviously, it’s going to be a personal challenge for me as I haven’t competed in a rally for over a year. A few days from now I’m going to take part in the Rallye du Var and that will give me a chance to reacquaint myself with the car”, he commented, adding that he will also make time in his schedule to do some testing before his Monte come back.
