It’s not hard to see that Joop Donkervoort, the creator of the Donkervoort brand, is a fan of Colin Chapman, the Lotus Seven and the philosophy of “adding lightness”.
His cars nowadays look very different to the Seven, though they still retain its proportions and core concept.
Mr. Donkervoort is one of those rare types of people who are extremely passionate about what they do. You may like your chosen profession, but you probably don’t love it as much as he loves building cars a very specific way.
Besides, he’s doing something that makes even the most ludicrous attempt by Caterham seem traditional and restrained in comparison. He may have started building his interpretation of a Lotus Seven, but it’s since then evolved into so much more, a very particular product.
