The Mercedes-Benz W123 series was one of the most successful model lines in the history of the brand, with almost 2.7 million units built between 1976 and 1985, when it was replaced by the W124.
Although solid as a tank, the chances of finding a model from this series in its original shape with a “fresh from the factory” look and less than 200,000 miles are slim to none. Unless you believe that this 1977 Mercedes 300D currently on sale on eBay is the real deal.
Its owner says it is “possibly the finest 300D for sale today,” and it’s hard to argue about that looking at the photos. Being a US-spec model, it sports oversized bumpers and specific headlights, but the rare Nickel Green color is as 1970s Mercedes-Benz as can get.
The paint is original and goes well with the chrome and aluminum pieces that appear to be in tip top shape too. The owner says the car has no rust whatsoever and no accidents in its history.
The Parchment MB-Tex interior contrasts with the bodywork and is “detailed to a very high standard,” according to the seller. The dash has no cracks, as it happens sometimes with cars left too long in the sun. That’s because the car has been kept in a garage.
All buttons, knobs, switches, and lights are said to be in working order, but the A/C has been converted to R134 and the Becker radio has been refurbished. The upholstery, loop carpeting and wood trim are in “excellent original condition.”
This particular 300D has allegedly covered very few miles for a diesel car, only 40,709 (65,514 km). That’s because it only had two owners who were car enthusiasts and who drove it short distances regularly. The seller says it drives perfectly and that it features the original OM617 engine.
All the tags and VIN numbers are said to be legit and the car is sold with original manuals, keys, and a 1977 brochure. At this point it may sound like one of those phony ads, but you can always head to Corona del Mar, California along with a specialist and check it out in the metal. Bidding is currently at is $10,300.
