We’ve been hearing of Alfa Romeo’s new models and engines for quite a while now, but the moment of truth is getting nearer. On June 24, 2015, the Italian brand will unveil the new rear-wheel drive midsize sedan that will kick-start its revamp process.

Fresh details have now emerged about Alfa Romeo’s new engine lineup, which will include high performance petrol and diesel units with up to 480 hp. According to supplier sources cited by Autonews Europe, the first three engines (two gasoline units and a diesel) will debut in the new midsize sedan, codenamed Project 952.

The range-topping unit will be a 2.9-liter direct-injection petrol engine with twin turbochargers producing 480 hp. This unit has been re-engineered from the 3.0-liter unit that Ferrari builds for the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans. The second petrol unit will be a four-cylinder 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo unit equipped with MultiAir variable valve timing technology.

Called Global Medium Engine, it will be the brand’s core petrol engine, with outputs ranging from 180hp to 330hp. The unit will be offered with manual and automatic transmissions with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive applications. Finally, the midsize sedan will also offer a new 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel with outputs between 135hp to 210hp.

Besides these engines, Alfa Romeo is also working with VM Motori on a new version of the 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel unit that equips some Jeep and Maserati models. The top version will produce 340hp, but a 275hp unit will also be offered. The V6 diesel will not be offered in the midsize sedan though, with its debut taking place on the new midzise SUV (Project 949) that will arrive in late 2016.
