It would be wrong to not be excited at the prospect of electrically-enhanced hot hatches from RenaultSport. They won’t happen right away, but according to a report based on insider information, the idea is definitely valid and being analyzed.
TopGear quoted their unnamed man inside Renault, who said, in regards to an electrified RS that “I could see it happening in the future,” telling us all to “Look at Formula E – all the vehicles are from Renaultsport. So I can certainly see RS hybrids in the future. Why not?”
Renault is obviously going to go down the techy road with upcoming hot hatches, a way lead by the current Clio RS, a model exclusively available with a flappy paddle gearbox and heavily reliant on electronics for the full experience.
It’s still a feisty hot hatch at heart, and the slightly detached feeling you get compared to its predecessor is offset by the extra comfort, usability and speed it offers. If Renault does make its future hot hatches hybrids, then we expect them to approach this matter very carefully and thus produce the kind of cars we’re used to from them. Mild hybrids would make (maybe even more) sense.
