You’re looking at what is likely the last rear-wheel drive hatch from BMW, the facelifted 1-Series that we spied in both regular and M135i trims, while also snagging a pic of its interior.
We say last because, just like the existing 2-Series Active Tourer and the upcoming 1-Series sedan, the next generation of BMW’s three- and five-door hatchbacks will switch to the firm’s front-wheel drive based UKL (Unter Klasse or entry-level) architecture.
The current 1-Series’ mid-cycle update will include a cosmetic touch up on the front end with new headlamp clusters, more prominent double kidney grilles and a redesigned front bumper, along with a nip and tuck for the rear lights and bumper.
We caught a look at one of the tester’s interiors where only the center console was covered, so expect some modest styling changes there, along with trim and color updates and the latest version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system.
The engine range should be carried over with light fuel economy improvements, unless BMW introduces its new 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel and petrol units, as some rumors from Germany suggest.
BMW’s updated 1-Series hatch will be presented next year.
