There’s been a lot of speculation about the long overdue Alfa Romeo mid-size saloon that will be launched next summer, one of which concerns its eventual name.
Currently bearing the internal “Project 952” designation, it was initially thought that it would resurrect the Giulia nameplate. A couple of months ago, though, it was reported that the company was considering a different name for the 159 successor, though it was unclear what that name might be.
It seemed like an odd choice, given that FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne himself had called the new model the Giulia. Then again, he has been known to change his mind and revise his plans quite often.
Italian website Autoedizione now says that perhaps both reports are in fact correct. It claims that rumors suggest Alfa Romeo will keep the Giulia name for Europe, possibly with a “1750” and “6C” suffix for the turbocharged four- and the six-cylinder versions respectively, and the 6C name for North American markets, where it will spearhead Alfa’s return, in keeping with the 4C badge for its compact supercar.
Apparently, nothing is set in stone – or it could be that Marchionne is keeping his cards extremely close to his chest. Either way, the D-segment saloon is expected to be launched in June (at the latest), with sales starting at the end of the year, so we will soon find out for sure.
