Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said in an interview that by 2018, their range will feature two new EVs, including a €2 billion investment in the development of electric drive systems and digital technologies.
One of the vehicles will be a sports car so odds are we’re going to see the R8 e-tron in all its glory – which will be obviously based on the 2nd generation R8. We expect it to do a lot better than the BMW i8 performance wise.
While this has been covered before, the 2nd model will be a sports activity vehicle, which means it will probably take on the Tesla Model X (a car we’re still waiting on). Standler said that the SAV will have a range of more than 310 miles (500km), which is pretty damn good.
The EV race is heating up with BMW (i3 & i8) and now Audi jumping the gun in front of Mercedes-Benz. It will be interesting to see how Merc replies in the next couple of years because we’re hoping they can do a lot better than the B-Class Electric Drive. And then there’s always Jaguar.
