It’s no secret that Mercedes GP has dominated the 2014 F1 season, and done so masterfully by tuning their hybrid engine system to racing perfection. For 2015, teams such as Honda hope to close the gap.
Honda has joined the likes of Ferrari and Renault in protesting against the current engine-freeze regulations for 2015. These regulations do allow for performance upgrades but then they freeze those upgrades for the entire year. If teams can’t be allowed to adapt during the year, then it’s very unlikely that they can compete at the level of Mercedes GP.
McLaren’s Eric Boullier told AUTOSPORT: “They [Mercedes] benefited from the fact that they did a very good job and they benefited from the fact that the regulations are locked with the engines being frozen. Most of the gains they have had come from the engine and they will for a couple of years until everybody can match them in terms of development. This is what they are benefiting from and if you could unfreeze the engine regs, you will see some catch up.”
While we can forgive the less than perfect use of the English language, Boullier is 100% right in demanding a change in regulations.
Hopefully teams such as McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Williams will be able to catch Mercedes and make the 2015 Formula 1 season a much more interesting one. We, for a fact know that there’s little interest in seeing Mercedes easily run away with the championship in each of the following couple of years.
