Although Daimler ruled out a Mercedes-Maybach SUV when the new sub-brand launched late last year with the Mercedes-Maybach S600 luxury sedan, it appears that plans are changing fast.
At this week’s Detroit Auto Show, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche confirmed that Mercedes-Maybach will put its logo on a SUV. Asked by Auto Express if such a model will arrive, Zetsche replied unequivocally: “Most likely!”
It’s not a surprising decision though, when one thinks about the extremely high level of interest for the luxury SUV segment. Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne sales are booming and other upscale brands such as Bentley and Maserati are preparing to launch SUVs – the Bentayga and Levante, respectively.
Even Rolls-Royce is considering an SUV, with the British luxury car manufacturer expected to make a decision this year, not to mention Lamborghini and its much-discussed Urus SUV.
It makes sense then for Mercedes-Maybach to release a competitor for these ultra-luxury SUVs. However, as with the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sedans, the SUV will be based on an existing model – the GL three-row SUV.
The latter will soon receive a facelift and will change its name to GLS to highlight its relationship with the S-Class. It’s most likely the model that will get a Mercedes-Maybach version.
