You’d really have to be quite mad to buy the old Mazda2 (unless it’s a really-really good deal) now that the very likable new one is out.
Sure, you may have to wait a few more months for it to arrive in showrooms, but we believe it will be worth it. The old model isn’t bad, but it does show its age, and even with the special UK versions called Black Edition and White Edition, it’s hard to justify the buy.
You’re still asked to pay £12,145, for which you get “bespoke exterior detailing including diffuser-style rear bumper trim, privacy glass, 15-inch Dark Grey alloys and no-cost option bonnet and roof stripe graphics” on top of the usual standard kit. Gadgets-wise, you get USB and auxiliary audio input, Bluetooth and stability control.
Only one engine is offered for these two versions and it’s the familiar 1.3-liter unit the car’s had for ages – it’s hooked up to a five-speed manual gearbox.
If you are fan of this shape Mazda2, a model with roots in the angular Ford Fiesta of the early 2000s, then you could justify it. Otherwise, don’t buy one of these and just wait for the new one – order books for it in the UK are already open!
