As much as we would have loved to see a production M6 with a wild factory aerodynamic kit, what you see here is BMW‘s upcoming GT3 racer.
These are the first real-life pictures of the prototype M6 GT3 that was teased last year through a pair of renderings and which will replace the current the Z4 GT3 from the beginning of next year at the GT racing scene.
Last Saturday, BMW gave the car its first run out in the open at its test track in Dingolfing, Germany, with Jörg Müller behind the wheel
“It is a fantastic moment when you walk into the garage and see this stunningly beautiful car,” said Müller. “I am very proud to have taken it out for its first few kilometres. A roll-out is obviously just an initial performance test but, on the whole, everything was very good and we had no problems. The engine really impressed me. It is powerful and has good torque, which is important for a car like this. I am confident that BMW Motorsport will provide its customers with a fantastic racing car, in the BMW M6 GT3.”
The M6 GT3 is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo production engine modified for use on the racetrack that delivers “over 500hp” and is paired to a six-speed sequential racing transmission, with the car weighing in at less than 1,300kg or 2,866 pounds.
BMW added that its Motorsports division “developed and produced the FIA-approved safety cell, which complies with the very latest safety standards” to protect the driver.
BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt commented: “This car incorporates all the experience we have gained in recent years on the endurance and GT racing circuits. We are well on schedule with the development, and are confident we will be able to take to the track in 2016 with a package that is competitive from the outset.”
