Skoda set the bar really high in people’s minds when it showed the Vision C concept and said it would serve as inspiration for future models. However, in saying so, we were really expecting to see that materialize sooner rather than later, especially since automotive design does not (ever) stand still and things have taken a turn for the properly futuristic in the last year or so.
So the new Superb came out and you actually have to struggle (and squint a bit) to see the resemblance to the far-far sexier concept. In concept form, the Vision C appeared low, sharp and modern, whereas the production Superb is yet again just a big VW Passat with Audi A6 levels of legroom – you just know it’s big in the back judging by its square-ish shape which is far more functional than it is pretty…
There’s no problem with that per se, as it will make for a great minicab, but it’s really just not interesting. I have a problem with this because Skoda kept teasing the Superb like it was going to be something else, yet here we are looking at a handsome but very bland and boring car to behold.
It may look better in the metal, like the Octavia did when it was launched, but it’s frankly just another forgettable shape.
Skoda could have done more with this, but as it looks now, it will be great in a pale color, with hubcaps and a checkered black and white line running down the side. Would I buy one because I wanted one? Never.
