Good news for Opel fans out of Rüsselsheim, as current gen Opel Astra has become the most efficient C-segment car in Opel history thanks to its new 1.6 liter CDTI engine.
The Astra now uses optimized drive shafts and better low rolling resistance tires, which along with an improved combustion process help the car reach record low emission numbers as well as better fuel economy. The 110 HP 1.6 CDTI model will now give you an average consumption of just 3.6 liters per 100km with CO2 emissions at 94g/km.
It’s not a big improvement (just 0.1 L/100km less) but when you’re playing the numbers game, every advantage counts.
The more powerful 136 HP version will need just 3.7 liters per 100km from you (0.2 L/100 km improvement), while doing its best to help out the environment with just 99g/km CO2 emissions.
Charles Klein, VP of Vehicle Engineering stated that “Our powertrains demonstrate how modern mobility works. CO2 reduction without making compromises on performance and comfort is the motto.” This reflects well on Opel’s entire line-up, as Klein added “We now offer extremely efficient turbo diesels in every vehicle class – from our new Corsa with phenomenal 82g/km of CO2 to the Astra and the mid-size flagship, the Insignia.”
If you know your Opel history, you’ll probably remember the time they introduced the Insignia EcoFlex, a car with a good 160 HP under the hood, yet capable of 5.2 L/100 km on average. This was an amazing result back in 2009, when people were still in awe of this car, considering its 1.6 tone weight and the fact that it could still give you very good straight line performance.
We’re certainly not surprised that they’re on top of their game when it comes to fuel economy in this segment.
