GM’s OnStar safety and communications system which is already available to some 7 million customers in the US, Canada, China and Mexico, is now coming to Europe.
Opel and Vauxhall will preview the new system at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next month and begin offering it across their passenger car range in the second half of the year.
In a nutshell, anyone driving the car can access OnStar at the touch of a button and ask an adviser for assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whether it’s for help with a flat tire, directions or an accident. In the case that the airbags deploy, then the system is activated automatically.
Additionally, it offers the ability to check data as tire pressure and oil life, and even control locking via the OnStar smartphone app, while the system can also “‘work’ closely with the police” to locate the vehicle in the event that it’s stolen.
Other features include a Vehicle Diagnostics functionality that sends a monthly report with the most important vehicle data and information (alternatively, the user can ask for a diagnostics check at any time) and a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect up to seven devices.
Opel will also host the world premiere of the Karl city car (Vauxhall Viva in the UK) and the Corsa OPC hot hatch (Vauxhall Corsa VXR) in Geneva.
