It seems that the acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover by India’s Tata Motors wasn’t all just about the new investors’ desire to finance the group but to also improve its own vehicles. Now, we hear rumors of a possible Land Rover Discovery Sport-based model in the works at Tata.
Autocar India says the model bears the code name Q501 and that its platform (known as L550) is indeed the same as the new Disco Sport (pictured).
The source article is quick to point out that while mechanicals will be shared, the look of the vehicles will be very different. As for power choices, at the moment Tata is investigating the possibility of using Fiat’s 2.0-liter Multijet II diesel engines, with between 150 to 175 hp.
It sounds like quite a different proposition to the borderline-premium new Discovery series, but we’ll have to see how this product evolves.
If it turns out okay, maybe they’ll even export it around the world, if that’s not already their plan for it…
