If you’ve tried (even some of the more expensive) racing wheel/pedal combos available on the market, you’ll undoubtedly have felt the difference between that experience and actually driving. You do the same basic actions, but feel so disconnected it almost spoils the fun.
Pedal feel is extremely artificial-feeling, primarily because of the limitations of potentiometers, however, you can now get a set that actually comes with a real Wilwood brake master cylinder to mimic the real thing.
Costing around $1,400 just for the pedals and mounting brackets for your frame, it’s really a steep investment for a private buyer. For more professional (maybe even driver training) applications, it should prove more popular, I think.
The pedals are called Pro Sim Pedals and they come from a company called Main Performance PC.
On the PC, you can connect them separately to your wheel via its own USB tether, yet if you want to use the pedals on a console, you’ll have to buy special adapters so that you’ll be able to connect them through the wheel and not directly into the system.
They’re a pretty cool piece of kit, but a bit expensive – perhaps they could serve as the basic for a very interesting DIY project that uses a scrap master cylinder you bought for $10 at your local scrapheap; if you make one of those in your garage, do let us know.
