If you thought that finding, a decent, original E30 BMW M3 coupe is a challenging task nowadays, try getting the convertible version. Not only was it produced in a fraction of the numbers of the hardtop (786 Convertibles vs. 16,585 Coupes), but more importantly, it was never officially imported and sold in North America.
The 25-year NHTSA exemption for otherwise non-conforming cars solves the second issue at hand, just as long as you can find one in Europe. Evidently, this eBay seller from California did, but he added a new problem into the mix: he’s selling his 1991 M3 E30 Convertible together with his 2013 M3 E93 Convertible.
“This offer is a package deal and will NOT sell separately,” he says in the description, which outlines the two BMWs.
The E30 is a 1991 (probably manufactured in 1990) model with the more powerful 2.5-liter S14 four-cylinder engine rated for 215PS or 212hp, that has about 120,000 km or close to 75,000 miles on the odometer.
Standing next to it is the last M3 Convertible and the last M3 to wear a naturally aspirated engine (albeit with nearly twice the displacement and twice the number of cylinders than the original) before BMW replaced the series with the M4, the E93. The seller says it has only 10,000 miles or around 16,000 km, and is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
For the two cars, he’s asking for $110,000 or best offer. From a quick search on Autotrader, we see that similar E93s go for between $50,000 and $60,000, but keep in mind, the last M3 Convertible is a far less desirable car than its ancestor is.
