Renault is reportedly stepping up its effort to bring us an Alpine sports car by the year 2016. It will be the first car of a broader range, and it will bear the name AS1.

Now, we learn more about where the brand will be positioned from AutoExpress which quotes Renault’s executive vice president, Bruno Ancelin. The high-ranking exec apparently openly admitted that Alpine will be aimed at the likes of Porsche and Audi, and also confirmed the AS1 name, which stands for Alpine Sportscar 1 and sounds like a direct rival for the Alfa Romeo 4C.

After that gets launched, the brand will seek to add “complementary models” to the lineup.

The source report suggest that Renault will try to go about offering a premium product with Alpine by possibly asking Daimler and Nissan for pointers, both of which have brands with premium aspirations.

Ancelin did not want to say just how varied the models in the range will be, but we presume they won’t have any crossovers in there… However, they still need to turn a profit, so who knows.
