Remember the dreadful Audi A2? Apparently its popularity as a used cars in some markets has made some people question whether or not Audi should get back in the ‘MPV’ game.
As of right now, BMW has made the most strides in that particular segment, with the 2 Series Active Tourer and the already announced seven-seat 2 Series Gran Tourer.
However, Audi says it doesn’t need to challenge any of those models in order to hit their target of 2 million annual sales, and that VW can handle that particular segment by themselves.
Audi development chief Ulrich Hackenberg told Autonews Europe that “VW has a wide range of minivans that are very successful. For the character of the brand Audi we don’t see a car in that form currently.”
He continued by saying that “The trend is moving very much toward SUVs, and we see very, very high conquest rates for smaller SUVs,” which is why they’re so excited about launching the Q1 crossover next year.
As for BMW and Mercedes, they’ll battle it out among themselves when it comes to MPVs, at least that’s what it looks like for the moment. Even though we wouldn’t be against seeing Audi enter the race, it’s not like the market is demanding that they do.
