An allegedly intoxicated man was recorded getting into his Jeep and driving away only to cause a major accident in which at least two people were injured moments later.
Filmed by a bystander named Ryan Scott who uploaded the video on his YouTube channel, it happened at around 2am Saturday morning on March 14, 2015, in DeKalb, Illinois.
Scott mentioned in a disclaimer that, “multiple people attempted to convince this man not to drive his vehicle. He should have listened“.
When the video starts, we hear him say, “I don’t know but I’m going to record this sh*t in case this drunk…he’s as drunk as f**k; you can tell just by looking at him!”
And sure enough, a minute after, he crashed into another vehicle at the intersection.
Just an observation on what we see here and not saying that the lady in the other car was to blame in any way as the Jeep driver turned left, but from this angle, it doesn’t look like she tried to slow down, which probably maximized the damage caused by the crash.
Since uploading the video, Scott has received some flack by YouTube users for not intervening to stop the man from driving his car.
For example, here’s what commentator “nicolatte12” wrote:
“U r an idiot. All of this could have been avoided by u just calling the cops before the drunk driver even left. But instead u videotape it all and then act like ur some kind of hero. Ps last I checked u r not a paramedic so you probably shouldn’t be pulling a girl out of a car like that. You’re a special kind of special aren’t u? Go get a real job and stop trying to be some YouTube celebrity”.
Scott responded to the criticism with the following post:
“My mind is blown away by all of the people that are saying “you should have stopped him, how could you let him drive?”. First of all, there WERE people that tried to get him not to drive; to no avail. He was a complete stranger. If anyone, his girlfriend that was in the car with him should have stopped him from driving. We are not his mother and father. It is not our responsibility to stop a full grown man from driving drunk.”
“To all of the people saying “well I would have done this or this”… You’re full of shit, sitting behind your keyboard. If I tried stopping every random stranger I saw driving drunk, I’d have a long list of assault and battery. Just because a person is drunk, doesn’t mean you can lawfully hurt them or steal their car keys. If you’re any of these people, you’re a fool and you obviously don’t understand the concept of personal accountability. Since when is it the guy behind the camera’s fault, but not the guy behind the wheel? Morons.”
Obviously, there are valid arguments to made on both sides and we’d love to hear them in the comments board below.
