While numerous luxury carmakers are plotting North American plants to boost capacity and lower labor costs, Jaguar Land Rover might be taking a different approach.
According to AutoNews Europe, JLR may indeed be looking to build another factory in either Austria or Turkey. The company primarily assembles its vehicles across three UK plants, in addition to a joint venture with Chery in China, a factory to assemble some models in India and a new plant in Brazil to start assembling the Land Rover Discovery Sport from 2016.
This news, however, flies against a report from earlier this month that suggested JLR was being courted by the U.S. state of Georgia. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Feb. 3 the governor of Georgia and other top state officials met with the company to discuss a possible facility in Georgia. At the time, JLR was widely believed to be looking Georgia is home to Porsche’s North American headquarters, and from July, Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. operations. Kia also has a plant in the state.
But JLR’s plan now hinges on pursuing a plant in areas with lower labor costs, according to reports. And that likely means a North American plant for the company is out of the cards for now.
